Yo,

Been awfully busy lately so that GotY blog post is still up in the air. It's coming though. Soon.

In the meantime, check out a couple of posts I did in my "Reality or Illusion" column. Basically the feature looks at a popular issue or an opinion from all possible perspectives and tries to figure out what exactly is the "Truth" and what is "Illusion"

Violence in Video Games

First up is Violence in Video Games. A very hotly debated topic of late. I mention some of the points which are often overlooked by people from both the sides in the heat of discussion. And of course, I equate NRA to the "wolves.

Reality or Illusion: Violence in Video Games

Dragon Age II

Over the past two years since it's release I've seen many polarizing opinions on DAII. Mine was a negative one but I was intrigued by what some of its passionate fans saw in it. Like you know, I'm a fan of the breed of "Underrated Overlooked RPGs" like Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines, Alpha Protocol to name a few.

So I did a replay of DAII last month and wrote a little retrospective on Dragon Age II almost two years after its release and whether it really deserved the storm of hate it received. An honest second look at a deeply flawed, potentially brilliant RPG.

Reality or Illusion: Dragon Age II is the Worst RPG Sequel

Emergent

The most recent piece is on the rise of emergent narratives and whether they really are the "true forms" of narratives borne out of the video-game medium. Popular examples from recent years like Dark Souls,XCOM and CKII are cited as well as SMTIII Nocturne from the yesteryears.

Reality or Illusion: Emergent -- True Form of Narration

That's all for now.

Catch you guys later!

Is there any proof that Electronic Arts isn't to blame for Dragon Age II's rushed development?  Because you literally threw that out of nowhere at the end despite never discussing it.  That's neither reality or illusion, just speculation on your part, and everyone elses.  But it isn't hard to blame EA based on their track record with Crysis, Dead Space and Dragon Age, each starting out remarkably strong and each floundering with the sequels.

Anyway, I like your posts, having read them, but may I suggest you drop that stupid bullet point at the end of the article?  It's almost degrading to the reader's intelligence to have a silly list of what is reality and what is illusion.  Your writing is strong enough without those meaningless additions.  Ditch them and don't use them again.  You'll be better off for it.

@NeonNinja Point noted. It is almost a TLDR version for dummies. But maybe I'm better off without it.

Also, I just bought Dragon Age II.  Because you never have any idea what you're talking about.  Ever.

Also worth noting that I screwed up on my early runs through the game but became better by the second half.  Whether you ultimately do better than me is still a possibility, but my scores for the last batch of levels were higher than my scores for the first batch.

I likely will.  I'm done with my current batch of 2012 releases.  The other ones remaining are still too pricey and my backlog is too big for me to bother with them.

As for Mark of the Ninja's 9.5, it's put me in a very peculiar bind.  That unranked list is essentially a necessity for me.

@NeonNinja @lightwarrior179 I think you're probably going to end up announcing you GotY lists before mine. I still have Mark of the Ninja and Borderlands 2 to go before I announce mine.

I think I am at the fifth chapter. Also I beat you in every level on the leaderboards thus far. I already knew how difficult the choice was for you and with Mark of the Ninja getting a 9.5, I think you'd best go for an unranked list lest you lose your mind over it.

I certainly hope you don't think I'm oblivious to your vile attempts at getting me to play that disgusting genrepiece.

Also, 3 hours of Mark of the Ninja in one sitting.... how many levels did you finish?  It's like a 7 hour game, man.  But it warrants replaying levels for better scores and unlocks.

As far as Spec Ops' story, yeah, we should.  I'm re-confused about my GotY now though.  I've got the nominees for each category lined up but I can't decide the victor of the main award.  I'm already going unranked for the first time ever with the list and I still don't know which game I preferred the most.  Now I'm just mulling it over, trying to figure out what takes the top spot.

@NeonNinja @lightwarrior179 Looking forward to it. I started Mark of the Ninja and played 3 hours of it on a stretch. There shall be no arguments here.

Speaking of which, we must continue our online discussions at some point about Spec Ops. A lot is to be discussed about that game and its implications. Also, I shall occasionally continue with my tireless quest of praising CKII in order to brainwash you into buying it. :P

@lightwarrior179

Bias?  That's the only reason why I bought it, boy!

Let's be upfront about this, I can only reasonably come to one of two conclusions with Dragon Age II.

1.  You are dead wrong and Dragon Age II is one of BioWare's greatest games of all time.

2.  You are dead wrong and Dragon Age II is the worst RPG sequel of all time.

There's no middle ground here, and depending on my stance, you and I will battle for many a sleepless night for online supremacy. :P

@NeonNinja @lightwarrior179 Hahaha! I'm always the blissfully ignorant shepherd,eh? :P

I am sure you'll enjoy it as long as you go into it with an open-mind and as little prejudice as possible.

I read the piece on violence in video games (as opposed to other mediums). All points friends and I have made over the years. Damn good read, and glad to see more people are looking into this issue objectively.

1) Other mediums have been just as violent, despite being less interactive.

2) Video games' age demographic has been moving up over the past decade. The average 'gamer age' is now in the 30s. So these bozos talking about 'impressionable youth' are really behind the curve on this one.

3) Many devlopers have been either exploring violence critically through their art or ashewing it altogether. Especially the indie crowd. Yet media bozos rarely -if ever- bring that up.

Well said on the video game violence blog.

For Dragon Age 2 my thoughts were mostly the same as your, problems mostly came from the city and the ending. What I really liked was that you had the ability to make characters like you or to see you as rivals, it never made sense to me in other games where you could just make your party hate you but they will still happily follow you around doing what you say. By the end of the game everyone liked me all the way except for Aveline who was the opposite and I maxed out rivalry. One of their conversations near the end where they got into an argument and fist fight was probably one of the stronger character moments Bioware has made.

@Legolas_Katarn I think it even gave the generally embarassingly cheesy romances a slightly better edge. The best part of my second playthrough as a female mage was being in a love triangle with Fenris and Anders and getting into some glorious arguments about magic. I think that quest I mentioned pretty much doomed the ending.

Some of the final boss fights with Orsino and Meredith were terribly long and boring.
