    Starcraft II Impressions

I attended Blizzcon in Paris recently (or rather, the World of Warcraft Worldwide Invitational by it's official name) and I played Starcraft II quite a bit. Completed 7 games, and spent a couple more just experimenting with the tech trees.

The basic mechanics are still intact, it's still a game where there are large armies battling each other, but at the same time, there are some fundamental differences which are making smaller skirmishes more common. Each race now has easier ways to go in through an opponents "back door" persay. The Zerg's Nydus colonies are much better now, you can spawn as many Nydus Worms as you wish out of them, you can load unlimited units into any of the worms colony and have them leave from any. Since overlords can now spawn creep, nydusing into your opponents base isn't a big challenge, I did it twice against my friend.

Toss' Phase Prisms are also a good jumping unit. You can warp any unit you want into any place that has an energy field, and the Prisms can create a field anywhere they are. Instant warping. You can also BUILD units into any place that has a warp field if you do the Warp Gate upgrade, which allows Gateways to build a unit anywhere there is a power field in approx. 3 or 4 seconds. Then there is about a 10 second cooldown before you can warp another unit in, and units cannot be cued into Warp Gates. DT's inbehind the enemy base with ease.

Terrans, in the reverse role, can box themselves much easier now. The Supply Depots being able to submerge into the ground to allow units to pass by is an amazing addition. but because of it the backdoor entrances have become quite common.

Some units that used to be small and mass-able are also much more expensive and powerful. The Hydra for starters now costs 100 of each resource and takes up 2 food. There seem to be more high tier units as well. Before the "high tier" units consisted of the archon, battlecruiser, carrier, arbiter, ultralisk, and a couple others. Now you can add the Colossus, the Zerg Queen, the Thor, and the Mothership to that list... minus the arbiter. Mid-tier units have been completely changed up, with the Hydra now being mid-tier, the goliath and the wraith gone and replaced with the Viking that fills both roles, the dragoon gone and replaced with 2 units that each serve a similar, but still very unique, roles. Yes, middle game is completely changed, but I actually enjoyed the middle-tier gaming, I think it's been done fantastically with the exception of the Hydra being there. I think that they only put the Hydra in the middle tier because of a lack of a better unit, rather than because they felt they actually wanted it there though. More detailed updates on my impressions are each individual race to come.

    Still in Europe

Which is why i'm still missing, should be back in Canada in a week or so.

I attended Blizzcon in Paris while here, absolutely fantastic. Played a LOT of Starcraft II and seen the live announcement of Diablo 3.

proper update once i'm using a keyboard that isn't missing the "m" key... bloody old laptops.
