My Friends

7Dec 12

Finally committing to a new machine for the first time in many years. I really don't need this, but it'll be a whole heck of a lot of fun to have. Highlights include:

  • 27" 2560x1440 LED IPS Display
  • 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz)
  • GeForce GTX 680MX
  • 16Gb RAM
  • 1TB Fusion Drive (128SSD + 1TB HDD)

Sure the thing won't ship until January, but it'll be sweet when it does... Delicious, perhaps.

So sexy.  I want.  I have never owned a Mac, but this thing just drew me right in when I was at the Apple store getting my iPad fixed.  I'm interested in your opinion of it.  Also, how much extra was the fusion drive??

@cell_dweller  225 USD with educational discounts. SSD in some capacity is a must at this point. The advantage of a Fusion Drive is the OS isn't caching anything on the SSD, it's actually living entirely on the SSD, and frequently used applications and media are automatically transferred to the invisible SSD partition.

@musicalmac That's pretty awesome actually.  One of my biggest gripe's about Windows is that it takes up 25GB on my 60GB SSD.  Need to get more space for that, but I don't want to go through the trouble of reimaging it so I have to clean it pretty often.

@PatchMaster  I got it directly from Apple with student discounts (10%, so the price is essentially what it would have been without student discounts and without tax). It wasn't inexpensive, that's all I'll say.

@Dan_Lero  The specs are outstanding, and that GTX 680MX from a hardware perspective is very much like its desktop sibling, only a lower clock speed (that I believe will dynamically shift gears when it needs the extra oomph, like all of Apple's products).

@musicalmac  Yeh, im only on 4GB RAM here, the extra 12 would be nice! Audio/Music production software is pretty demanding. Might start saving for this.

@Dan_Lero Truth be told, I probably didn't need the i7 or the 680, but OSX does take advantage of every core you give it, and the i7 has 8 cores (4 physical and 4 virtual). So that plus a Fusion drive makes for a never-wait sort of experience. I wish I didn't have to wait to try it. :P

Wow! I haven't seen this model yet! Looks insane, specs are awesome too! I'm rocking a 2009 model Mac here, pretty jealous now! This would suit me perfectly!

Nice. We built a new gaming machine last year, it's amazing the changes that take place in 7yrs!

@Gen_Warbuff I'm really looking forward to it. It won't ship until January, most likely.
