I Am a PC Elitist (And My Relationship with the Other Half)

Here I sit on a Friday night, home for the weekend, away from the hustle and bustle of school. However, being home means I am also away from PC which means no gaming. This distance gives me time to sit down and read the latest in gaming news, drama, and most of all, gamers opinions. So as it would be, I was making my rounds when I came across a discussion about the new DLC for the PC/360 game Left4Dead. This was released fo a few days ago by Valve for no cost on the PC. However, Microsoft decided to slap a $7 tag on the 360 version causing quite a stir amongst the 360 community. As all discussions go, this one naturally turned into an "E-Peen Battle" on the board I was reading. I was reading along as I fed off of the cries of befould gamers...on and on it went, as I enjoyed every second.

However, soon, all was not well. As I minded my own business, the bane of my existence as a PC gamer hit me, and I quote "We never spend $3000 dollars On it [the hardware] like you PC users do". Oh, my console bretheren, why must you continually bring this generalization up? If I made up facts to support my arguement, I would have been president already....good lord. While yes, there are people who DO spend thousands of dollars every year, they are a huge minority and they are far richer than the average PC gamer and can thus afford to do so. I repeat for clarity, PC gamers (the majority) do NOT spend thousands of dollars every year.

I am going to offer a personal story to demonstrate a great way to PC game. Three years ago, I spent exactly $605 dollars on a brand new PC (OS included, if you must know). $605. Recall that this was the time when the PS3 was more expensive including tax, and that the 360 was still $400 (the core was $300, but came without a HD, what a conundrum). Since that point, I have spend exactly $81 (hardware failure, not even a necessary upgrade) and now I can run games in HD (ok, crysis only 720P on medium, still looks nice) with the graphics turned up. Now, lets take a look at other factors in terms of cost.

So you have your shiny new console (360 owners, yours costs as much as a PS3, no HD at the beginning, want a bigger one, pay more, want Wifi, pay more, etc.), you plug it in to your HDTV (you have one right, little more than a monitor) and connect to the internet. For one, it is free, for the other you have to pay $50. Once past that point, you load in your new game which cost you $10-$20 more than your run of the mill PC copy. A few hours later, you finish the great game....and you want more. You log on to PSN or XBL to see what they have. Oh, a few new missions, $10. Three new MP maps, nice, also extra. How about that horse armor? Extra. Forget about game overhauls which are mods. The point is not to put down consoles, no, they have their purpose, but it is instead to show that while we may spend more (or even equal, at times) to get our hardware, by the end of this generation, we are pulling even.

I dont hate consoles, nothing better than relaxing with friends over a game of Call of Duty, or whatever you choose to play. I have owned consoles in the past as a matter of fact. I am just trying to demonstrate the actual cost of your console. I will state right now, I overlooked the Wii, it is not for me, and for the most part none of this whole DLC debate or cross platform talk even pertained to this console. If you like your Wii and feel great about the cheapness of it, grats, your console has the third party support of the French Army. As for the other two, I hope you choke on your Live Supscriptions and DLC (not really....maybe).

New Graphics Card, RUN FOREST RUN!

I got a HD3650 512mb, it is nice. It runs things waaaay better than my 7300le (which died). Games are pretty cool now, but i dont play much. Cept Crysis, that game is a bit of fun, and it looks good. All in all, the 3650 gets a solid A, as it is cheap, requires little power, and runs all games in 720P....FTW.
