This game was made for the gamecube originally, so I don't think it's fair to judge it quite so much as a wii game. Even in doing that, it's great. But I think we'll have something really exceptional when Zelda wii (tentative title) comes out, as you can see with how nice mario galaxy looks and plays, the next Zelda will be far more comparable.

Having voices would be crap, everyone has there own thoughts of what the characters sound like, it would just ruin it. Its a tradition!!

This game should have at least got a 9.3. I think the Wii remote controls work excellently, especially the sword slash and aiming. Ive discovered an easy way to use the shield attack that should have been mentioned in the game: simply point the nunchuk up. And simply text based talk is just fine with me and many others. So this game should have gotten more credit than it did...I just wish they added a musical instrument of some sort

while i feel the score was low, i really agree with all his negative remarks.

IM glad he came out and said it.
Music is in midi format, nunchuck wiggle attack is lame, speaker on the nunchuck is also cheap, and where are the voices.

Wow, all these people so upset by this review to this day. Guys, he gave it an 8.8 ... That's pretty good. You know what? This game is pretty good. I think Jeff would agree with that.

The reason why this game was given a lower score, was not because there wasn't anything new, but because this game didn't meet gaming standards. While this game is fun, I felt that the graphics looked like they could have been released on the gamecube, and not look any different. (Yes I know there's a gamecube version.)

The sound was okay, but there wasn't enough new music in it. The sound effects sound like they could have been n64. I recognized a lot of the same music and sound EXACTLY like they were in wind waker.

And, I felt that this game was to easy.

A game that would meet standards in 2003, dosen't meet standards in 2006.

So thumbs me down if you want, I don't care.

Oh and don't say I hate Zelda, or nintendo. Ocarina of time is my favorite game ever. And I love nintendo.

    Posted Sep 2, 2009 5:15 am GMT

Actually, in most polls the Gamecube controller was deemed more desirable and easier to use than using the Wiimote for TP. Plus, with all the love and attention that goes into Zelda's art - I know I'd much rather have the C stick free camera to view it properly, over imprecise waggle control - thrown in for gimmicks sake, which like Jeff said, isn't 1:1 with your sword; so pragmatically, it should of just been on a button. Also, I didn't find it "fun" missing all those deflected lightning bolt counter-attacks during the last boss - due to using the Wii remote; that boss was way more tractable using the GC pad.

This game is far better than this review says. I don't get what's wrong with the sound, it's just like you want it to be.
And voice acting? Urgh, I wouldn't like that. I would hate to hear Zelda speak. And Midna DOES talk
Though I'm not really experienced at Zelda games, 35-40 hours is too short. I did it in 60 hours xD
Oh, I forgot: using the Wii remote to attack is MUCH more fun than using buttons. :/
    Thanks for reading

The problem with this review and the reason why so many people frown upon it is he focused way too much on the negative side of things, making everyone perceive him to be a total moron when it comes to Zelda games.

It's true that he should compare this to past Zelda games and that yes, there isn't something spectacularly new like how Ocarina of Time felt back then. However, I believe this should not bring down the overall score of the game because this game does deliver in everything you expect in a Zelda game and it did in fact, do it better than before. To further support my view, Jeff did not speak of any of the brilliant dungeon and puzzle-solving elements that we all come to love. There is so much to praise about the clever design of the main core gameplay regardless if it's familiar or not, it's still a fresh experience. I believe just reviewing the gameplay aspect alone should score this game at nothing lower than a 9.

And that is why I believe Jeff's review raised so much controversy. I think his expectations of the game overshadowed the subtleness and beauty of the classic gameplay that was done so well once again, even though it was similarly done before. My score for this game would be a 9.3. It's a game that doesn't bring something dramatically new to the gaming scene in what our expectations were, but it did deliver in what we all have come to love about the series to the maximum potential.

  • dramadude186

    Posted Aug 30, 2009 4:49 pm GMT

I fully support Jeff and his critique of this game. It didn't deserve a 9, and honestly, I kind of feel like they scored it a little higher than they should have because fondness for the Zelda brand makes it difficult to admit this game isn't as good as it should be.

Yes, this game is a sequel to one of the greatest games of all time, and that means raised expectations. However, Ocarina of Time came out almost 10 years before this game was released, and the gameplay is virtually identical in each. That's just unacceptable. No matter how good a game is, the gameplay needs to start evolving by the time we get to the third sequel (I say third because Majora's Mask and Wind Waker seperate Twilight Princess from Ocarina).

Nintendo has gotten lazy. They used to be the leading innovators in the business, and now most of their games feel like obligatory, by the numbers endeavors. It's too bad, because Nintendo has been responsible for some of my favorite gaming experiences ever.

One of the greatest games I've ever played! The sound isn't bad at all, it would have been nice to hear it fully orchestrated though. I think this game is close to what I'd expect from Ocarina of time, all other zelda games gave me a huge bore after beating it like twice, in Oot i was able to play through the game for about 7 times, and I'm beating TP for the 3rd time now, its really fun. Oh and about talking in cutscenes, we only think Link is cool because he DOESN'T talk, imagine what he'd sound like... I actually like it that Zelda games are sticking to text, it suits it a lot better. This game deserves atleast a 9.4. But GS is just too harsh, agreeing with Joeker96.

  • Joeker96

    Posted Aug 26, 2009 11:45 am GMT

That's a bit harsh. Especially the sound. You gave GTA4 10/10 yet that barley even had music!

  • absolutezero132

    Posted Aug 22, 2009 7:56 pm GMT

8.8? I don't think so. Voice acting would have been nice, yes. However, it doesn't bother me in the least, and GS didn't complain about it in Mario Galaxy so that to me is pretty unfounded. Really, the only thing to complain about is the music. It should have been fully orchestrated. But even that isn't bad at all.

Good game. If only good games like these came out more often for Wii owners. It's a shame we all still have to rely on Mario, Link, and Samus to get a decent gaming expirience from nintendo 95% of the time.

I just completed this game. I honestly did not find combat to be a chore. Having to waggle the Wii remote was a little bit unwieldy, but no so much as to make the game unplayable; far from it. Pointing at the screen when using the bow, clawshot, etc. actually works incredibly well. As an owner of both a Wii an an X-Box 360 (which I am trading in for a PS3), I can say free of bias that there ARE a lot of good games on the Wii. No, the graphics aren't as good, but you know what? The graphics aren't the most important part of a game. What matters most is whether or not you are entertained and enjoying yourself, which you will be if you play this game.

Terrible game, they exaggerate controls to make it look like you control the sword via how you swing the wiimote. There's barely any skill involved, No strategy,
you cant load chapters, or levels, after beating them, very cheesy presentation, For the wii, great graphics. The design and scenery isn't half bad. Bad 3D models, though, as well as actual detail in a figure.
Wii technology is very last generation, and there have been arcade games that had motion sensors 10 years ago, but they actually worked. The wii only outsold other systems because they're the cheapest, and the features are greatly exaggerated.

Its the same as Age of Empires 2. When a game makes a revolution in a genre its gives an extremely high standard that its sequel should go up to. In other words, if a game made a revolution, its sequel is expected to do the same especially if given much more advanced tools than its previous version.

Happpened with AoE 3, here, and will happen with Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2. If we put this point aside, this game deserves a full 10.

Another thing, the text-chats is a tradmark for Nintendo games especially Zelda. They're just keeping the *feel* which is nice. As for the mute Link, just youtube " Link Zelda Excuse me" and learn why.
