World of Warcraft is indisputably the most successful MMORPG of all time and for good reason.

World of Warcraft has fallen under much angst-ridden bashing and harsh criticism over the many years it has been around, and the complaints only seem to get worse as time goes on. I think many would agree that a good game is defined as much by having a substantial group of haters as it is by having a huge fanboy following. If something is at the top of it's class there will always be people to criticize it.
WoW as I see it is the precursor to the modern MMO. Gamers will constantly undermine new MMO's as being WoW copies, and lets face it, if it's any sort of traditional MMO, it sort of feels like WoW. WoW may not have single-handedly created the genre, indeed it started far before my experience with the games, but it affirmed the standards for an MMO from that point on.
WoW has fufilling and engaging PvE and PvP and while questing and grinding can become dull, there are plenty of ways to mix things up with world events, a truly expansive crafting system, and simply exploring the incredibly large world of warcraft.
The game is built on a more than substantial foundation of lore built over many years that makes the game feel complete and give the player a reason and a purpose for every place, person, creature and quest.
By now anyone who has a remote interest in MMO's has likely played WoW, but if they have not, or if they have never before played an MMO, this is the one to start with. It truly is a classic and the modern standard for the MMO genre.
