Can some Online pros give me some tips?

Man I am having a hard time online with this game. Especially in the area of kicking out of pins. Everyone in my e-fed complains about how kicking out is super easy in this game, yet I go down once I'm injured.
Is there a trick? The red zone will be right at the start of the bar, but once I hold down A, if just for a half a second, the meter will go just past the zone. Timing it seems impossible. Is there lag that might be screwing me up? Is there another way to kick out that just holding down A and releasing it?

just tap the button instead of holding it to start with until the red bit gets further down the meter then its best to hold.
