i agree. the game is fantastic, and kevin vanord always underrates things that arent MGS. i do have to say i dont mind the texture pop-in, but i really cant stand the autosaves for the game. the game tells you that it will autosave, but it rarely does. this causes extreme fury if you forget to save before a boss battle, or during a long firefight....

@ chrism95 I agree and the glitch you are talking about is called texture pop-in

Deserves a 9.5 - But I guess any game that isn't MGS4 Kevin VanOrd underates. The only flaw I found in this game was this little glitch that causes the graphics to fade in and out. It's nothing really that bad and it doesn't effect the gameplay, but it still is noticable.

is the shooting similar to fallout 3? Or does it have a better "feeling" to it..?

Deserves a higher score like 9.0 or 9.5

Mass Effect is another great Bioware RPG, and if you can get over the "sticky" cover system, cookie cutter sidequests and awkard conversations, you should find an epic game in there, as I did. Hopefully though, seeing as these quabbles are relatively minor flaws, these problems will be fixed up for the second game. Here's hoping ME2 is even better.

Oh and as for the length, my first playthrough, which included sidequests, took about 30 hours, but for most people - seeing as how I'm extremely slow - the mainquest should only last around 15 hours.

turret goes up and down, on xbox!

  • albiokay

    Posted Jun 14, 2009 4:54 pm GMT

the turret on the vehicle most certainly CAN move up and down, on both the pc and the xbox
its not as accurate from 3rd person perspective, but if you zoom in, you have more control over the turret

I didn't see any spoilers, I dunno what everyone else is talking about. Maybe if you have already played the game and know what you're looking for, but I haven't and didn't see any plot-spoiling info.

i have no idea what kevin is talking about, i barely ever used the menus and the weapons/powers wheels. i pretty much stuck to using the guns more than the powers and i had a blast doing it. the only problem i found in the game which kevin points out is the inability of the tank's turret to move up n down

So I actually bought this game when it first came out (I got the Collectors Edition). I stopped playing it for some reason but I got really bored a week ago and decided to try it out. NOW, I'm totally hooked on this game. I already beat it on paragon and now trying to beat it as a renegade. I'm not sure how buggy this game was at launch but Mass Effect is bugless and flawless (except for the occasional popping). GREAT STORY and Awesome Gameplay.

Kevin's reviews are without a doubt my favorites. He's thorough and unlike other reviews I watch, I really get a good idea of what the game will actually be like when I play it.

  • mattcarlo

    Posted May 21, 2009 3:42 pm GMT

I do not like Kevin's reviews, he complains too much about the little things. Is the game fun, yes or no? That is the question that needs to be answered. There is no need to say that playing the game like a third-person shooter is going to get you killed.

I reckon the only reason people are now saying VanOrd is a good reviewer is because he reviews alot of games - so he's familiar - and people like whats familiar!!! All the other reviewers are rad too, its just you havent got to know them properly.

This game is around $25 now and it is a great game, though not for everyone. I know a couple of people that didn't like it. I was really looking forward to Mass Effect and bought it day 1, about 9 hours into it life came up and I am now on my 3rd attempt to finish it. I am 70 hours into it and about 70% complete, though I have been searching everything on every planet. Fantastic game that I plan on playing 3-4 times before ME 2 next year. Also, best Achievements as unlocking some of them give you bonuses like 10% health increase.

Incredible sci-fi epic! Donteatcream, how can a 40 hour game not be long?

  • Biklak

    Posted Apr 4, 2009 7:20 pm GMT

This is an AWFUL review. This guy focus too much on some not so accomplished parts of the game, that dont even make 10% of your gameplay time. The driving parts are only for the people obsessed with exploring every single bit of gameplay, and the inventory is not really an issue (hes probably one of those players that likes to sort all his potions on the same side of the bag)

This is one of the most beautiful, breathtaking and engaging games i ever experienced in my long history of gaming (i hadnt enjoyed a game this much since the original Deusx and Half-Life) The plot is simply amazing, making shame of a lot of hollywood sci-fi blockbusters. dont be surprised to see this game in a cinema on a near future.

The game takes place on beautifully crafted universe, i would even dare to say a universe at par with the likes of Star Wars and Trek. The complexity of the racial relationships, the deep history that unravels during the adventure, the amazing locations you visit, make it a very gratifying experience indeed.

On top of all that a very good and fun to play combat system, brilliant interaction with ingame characters, which bring some golden moments to the gameplay, where moral choices are a joy to explore, make this a must play title.

pls pls pls if your a sci-fi fan, dont miss this MASTERPIECE, even if your not, give it a go and you wont regret. u can pick this game for a tenner now. u can really see the blokes at Bioware poured their hearth and souls into this game, best game studio out dare with out a doubt.

Think the only weak spot in this game is it's texture poping. Appart from that good story, good voice acting, fun to play and... well. One of the few games i went for the 100% achievements

  • Smackerlacker

    Posted Feb 24, 2009 2:31 pm GMT

Dunno what you guys mean when you say 8.5 is a low rating. They HAVE to leave some headroom. The only games that make it past 9 are the ones that exceed all expectations. You know, the ones that make you look back and wonder why you played all that other crap. Like Ocarina of Time, or Half-life or something. You can't just throw out a 10 whenever you feel like it, or what's the point right? O' course I'm right. I always am.

I'm sure that this has been asked... maybe I'm wrong because I haven't seen any posts or comments: The one thing I really don't get in the gamespot review is the complaint about not being about to shoot enemies with the turret on your rover up or down, only on the same level. Hello? If you use the right stick, you can aim up or down. I've never had a problem with this but it is one of the biggest complaints in this review. Maybe if you can't figure out how to play a game, you shouldn't be the one reviewing it.
