Like Marathon. Everything's so slow. Sectoids and Thin Men stay around for months, wounded soldiers stay out of the game for two, four weeks sometimes, new technologies take forever to research early on...it's pretty great.

Rookies having random stats is pretty fun too. Really makes everyone unique.

So how do you get the 2nd Wave DLC? I looked on PSN today (1-11-13) and no luck. Does it download as a patch or background patch? (I'm on PS3)
  • Jan 12, 2013 2:32 am GMT
Yeah it's just a patch, you just start up the game and it should tell you there's an update.

Apparently it also fixed a few annoying bugs too like enemies spawing out of nowhere due to an AI pathing glitch.

Any truth to the rumor that some of the Second Wave options are only available if you beat the game on Impossible? It's not a problem for me -- I finished up my Impossible run this afternoon and the last mission was really underwhelming compared to some of the Terror and UFO missions I had thown at me -- but I'm sure someone else will ask at some point.

Some of the Second Wave options do look interesting, though. I'm trying to figure out which one(s) I want to try in my next game now that I'm going to go back and play on "Normal" and trying the DLC missions.

Yes, there are four options only available if you beat it on Impossible.

    The normal ones are:

Damage Roulette: Weapons have a wider range of damage.
New Economy: Randomized council member funding.
Not Created Equally: Rookies will have random starting stats.
Hidden Potential: As a soldier is promoted, stats increase randomly.
Red Fog: Combat wounds will degrade the soldier’s mission stats.
Absolutely Critical: A flanking shot guarantees a critical hit.
The Greater Good: Psionics can only be learned from interrogating a psionic alien.
Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete.
Results Driven: A country offers less funding as its panic level increases.
High Stakes: Random rewards for stopping alien abductions.
Diminishing Returns: Increased cost of satellite construction.
More Than Human: The psionic gift is extremely rare.

Then if you beat it on Impossible you can also unlock:

War Weariness: Council funding goes down over time.
    E-115: Elerium degrades over time.
Total Loss: Lose all soldier gear upon death.
Alternate Sources: The power source cost to build facilities increases dramatically.

Marathon and Hidden Potential are a lot of fun.

Beat Ironman on Classic before I stuck my nose into Impossible. Been there, done that, have the lousy t-shirt.

I enjoy the game better when there doesn't seem to be an excruciating difficulty curve. That's why I'm going back to normal for trophy cleanup.

    I meant Ironman Impossible!

But yeah, may not be for you (just as "trophy cleanup" is definitely not for me)

I enjoy X-Com very much. I'll probably keep playing it even after I have the platinum trophy. But I don't enjoy it nearly as much when the challenge is excruciating and the game is so unforgiving like it is on Impossible. It's the same reason I play the other Sid Meier/Firaxis games on lower difficulties.

After the Terror Mission where I had to fight four Sectopods while I still had laser weapons, mid-range armor, and had only brought one heavy to the fray (not expecting four Sectopods, naturally), that was enough for me. And that doesn't even include the Berserker thrown into the alien configuration for that mission who typically had two or three of my guys wetting their pants at any given time.

If it's all the same to you, I'll play to enjoy the experience and the drama and have fun shredding aliens. If it's all the same to you, I'll use the Second Wave options to tinker with the difficulty level. Not trying to be a jerk or a troll, but I'm just as happy not trying to undergo such a masochistic experience.

Oh yeah I forgot that one. Pretty awesome when your heavy has the aim of a sniper.

Wait, these options only become available after beating the game? Ate they available for all saves?

They become available afte you beat the game once.
You turn them on as you begin a New Game (like Ironman). So you cannot toggle them for existing games you have saves for.

Also, I just got this game last week. Taking my time with it. I beat the game on easy the first time, and I only have the first four options available in the Second Wave menu. So I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that normal would unlock 5 - 8, classic 9 - 12, and impossible 13 - 16.

Those and Not Created Equally are the most fun in my opinion.

Marathon certainly adds a fair amount of value to the South America continental bonus.

I started my new game (on Normal) with New Economy / Not Created Equal / Hidden Potential / High Stakes / Results Driven. I'm not really far enough in to make real judgments on how those options are affecting my soldiers, but it's certainly interesting to see the rewards for Abduction missions now and it completely warps one's priority list when it comes to satellites.
  • Jan 16, 2013 5:49 pm GMT
Well, this is worth a chuckle or two....

I've got a Sniper who has trouble hitting the broad side of a barn even when he has a Scope on his weapon. I've got two Assault troops of the same rank who are substantially more accurate than the Sniper at range.... when using their shotguns.

I've also completely ignored North America so far in my game but rushed my satellite coverage over South America because of the monetary rewards. Argentina and Australia turned out to be the countries worth the most cash on a monthly basis, while the United States (and Canada and Mexico) are down near the bottom.

Don't let anyone tell you that strange things can't happen with Second Wave options. Or even without them -- due to the random class assignments and a slew of injured soldiers, I ended up doing the last Slingshot mission plus a small UFO plus a terror mission back-to-back-to-back (in-game time: ~3 days) with three Heavys and three Snipers because that's all I had healthy.

That's another thing, I LOVE the long injuries on the soldiers. Really makes the officer training school double healing rate upgrade worth it. And then your squad actually gets some variety because dudes are out for a month at a time.
