Vita Flopic creators = schadenfreude
Legit discussion on sales = intelligent debate - Nov 4, 2012 5:31 pm GMTI'm doing the same thing. Maybe if 999 came out on the Vita would play it first. I don't have a DS and this is not the kind of game I am eager to emulate. I like that VLR has full voice acting, and I just don't want to sink all my time into 999 first. I don't get to play games too often. so to play 20 hours would take me months. I've heard you have to play 999 twice to get the true ending, so that would be 40 hours if true. If I did that I wouldn't get to play VLR until sometime next year. Anyway, I look forward to zero escape 3, when it comes time to play that I won't have to feel bad for not playing VLR.
- Nov 4, 2012 9:49 pm GMTThe problem is that the story is very complicated and has impactful moments that a lot of people that have played the game do not wish to spoil for someone else. And the gameplay IS the same.

*clears throat*
Should you play 999 first? Yes. Do you have to? No. 999 is easily one of the greatest DS games there is. And its more like a book then a game, which says alot. I dont know who told you the game play isnt the same, but they lied. I'm also not sure who told you this was a far better game. Why do you think VLR was made? It was due to the massive amount of high scores and reviews that 999 received. VLR may not be a direct sequel, but you will sure enjoy the story more after 999. Many, if not all, characters are mentioned at one point or another. I've yet to see Lotus or The 9th Man directly mentioned, but I still have a little bit left to go through. Also, on the VLR main menu, it says "Volume 2" in the corner. Only makes sense to play volume one first, right? Assuming you already have a DS, 999 is only 20 bucks. You'll easily get your money's worth. Out of all my friends, I'm the only one who owns the game. They're currently passing it around, so they can enjoy it before diving into VLR.
999's story revolves around time loops, morphogentic fields, and how your brain seems to function at a higher rate when your life is in immediate danger. 9 people are abducted. Some know each other. Most do not. Therefore trust is lacking in a game where teamwork is mandatory to surviving. The nonary game differs then it is in VLR. Everyone has a number on their bracelet. 1-9. There are 9 doors throughout the ship you are trapped on. In order to pass through a certain door number, your root number of your bracelets must equal the number on the door. For example, bracelets 3, 5, and 8 add up to equal 16. 1+6 =7. Therefore the root number is 7, so those 3 people, and only those 3 people, can enter the number 7 door.
Thats the general gist of it. As others have said before me, explaining the story in its entirety would take FAR too long and you would just continue to have more and more questions. Playing it for yourself or at least watching a lets play on youtube are your best bets if you cant make any sense of the wiki. - Nov 6, 2012 4:12 pm GMTAsking what the first game is about is like asking what the TV show Lost is about or what harry potter or game of thrones are about. Sure you could say Lost is about people who got stranded in an island, harry potter is about a boy who goes to a magic school and game of thrones is about a bunch of factions all fighting for the throne. But it's more than that. The story evolves into something so much more. And any sort of summary will not do it justice.
So let's just say this. Nine hours, Nine doors, Nine persons is a story about nine people who were abducted and put into a survival game. They have nine hours to solve the puzzles given to them and solve the mystery of why they were forced to play the game to begin with. That's it.
If you really dont want to play the first game, then just go ahead and just VLR on it's own. Will you enjoy it? Of course, it's a great game. But you probably won't have the same satisfaction as someone who actually played through the first game. Can you compensate by reading a summary or synopsis? No, it'll just be confusing and might take away some of the fun if think too much about it.
So just play VLR on its own.

Honestly, I finished the Clover and Dio endings in VLR before I decided I needed to know about 999. If you want the story without having to buy the game and you have 500~ minutes, watch the walkthrough Yuhzinho posted on youtube. The I'm only on part 16 (out of 51, I think) right now, but the story really is fantastic and worth spending the time to experience. Even if you don't want to play the game, watching it unfold is awesome.---

I wish it wasn't so expensive. I'd buy it for 15 but its 20+ at amazon. I'm also not a fan of replaying it so many times. Do you have a link to the lets play?

He starts off with Safe Ending, then moves on to True Ending, judging from the titles. Haven't gotten past part 13 myself.

- Nov 8, 2012 12:26 pm GMTI'm not playing 999 either and I'm sorry if it's an awesome game and you feel like I should play it to enjoy VLR, but that annoys me, isn't VLR good enough to stand on it's own? I'm sure it is, I'm just tired of hearing people who like a game in a franchise telling you that you MUST play the game when it's not available on any store and it's on a different console.
I'm sure I will miss some references and it would have been better if I could have played it, but it's either I skip 999 and play VLR or I don't play VLR at all so in that case I think I can get enjoyment out of VLR still. - Nov 8, 2012 12:58 pm GMTRD_21 posted...

It's not just because it's a good game, it's because several plot twists hinge on you having played 999 to work.

But then why put it on the Vita in the first place if I NEED to have that prior knowledge of a first part that isn't available on my console.
To be honest I only have so much free time on my life and with a 50+ games backlog between my PS3, PC and Vita I can only play so much. Tried the demo and decided to give this game a shot only to have people telling you that you need to spend another 10 hours before you can enjoy your purchase, it's annoying even if it's the truth.
I would really like to see someone who played VLR and not 999 post if they enjoyed it or not. - Nov 8, 2012 2:41 pm GMTThe reason we are all saying it's important to play 999 because of the story. Both games are all about reading. The gameplay is the story (besides the puzzles).
Plus this game, not just 999, takes a lot of time to read and comprehend.
You guys have no idea how important 999 is to this game. Also I have no idea why they put it on the Vita, since it's prequel isn't on the system. Who knows? Both games are great, but if you don't feel like taking the time to play 999 then you're all just missing out.

I could potentially write up summary later today.
If you think you can do it justice and not be too confusing Id love to see you take a stab at it. You can even just use the Wiki one but expand on some of the confusing aspects.
From what I understand:
MAYBE SPOILERS
9 people get abducted on a ship or something. They find out that each one had a twin except one who is a cop that did the experiment already on one of the titanic ships when they were kids. All the kids died but one, or maybe the one did die also, and you find out you are just playing as the kid the whole time.
Oh and the experiment is to see if people perform better mentally under extreme life or death conditions.
Thats my summary of the Wiki page, lol

No one's saying that you won't enjoy it, they're just saying you won't enjoy it as much. The thing is, VLR is a direct sequel that only goes so far to explain to the player what they need to know from the first game. Which is pretty rare in video games, and even movies nowadays, it's pretty much only in books anymore. But essentially starting out with VLR is kind of like starting out a book series on the second book. The game will try to explain to you as much as you need to know to understand, but it isn't going to sacrifice story in order to do that.
